Sales of Lithium-Ion Battery in September mainly due to Accelerate E-Bikes and Scooters

The interest in electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrids has come on strong over the last year or so, pushed relentlessly by the car manufacturers to promote a newer, greener generation of transport. As the Chevy Volt, electric Ford Transit Connect, Nissan and other sheet tipping in the market over the next year, it is clear that will go only so its lithium ion batteries can take.

Help may be on the road, by a report published earlier this month by Lux Research Boston planned a massive wave of spending on energy storage technologies in the next five years. More specifically, the firm forecasts that the market for batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells for transport and storage, distributed generation, transmission and distribution technologies electricity system to more than double the 21.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2010 to 44.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.

The market for vehicle storage technology Electrical energy is almost double that of 7.7 billion U.S. dollars this year to 14.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, and the batteries will be an important part of this growth. Surprisingly, electronic bicycles (e-bikes) and scooters, as opposed to plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, will lead the largest growth of automotive batteries in the next five years, the principal author and analyst Jacob Grose said in a press release. Sales of e-bikes and batteries scooters are expected to increase from 6.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2010 to 10.9 billion U.S. dollars within five years.

While lead-acid batteries are the most common today in the transport devices (they're found in 93 percent of China's e-bike, for example), demand for lithium ion batteries increase by almost three times faster than lead-acid progress.

That's good news for those interested in buying a plug-in hybrid or EV because the performance of lithium ions will have to improve quickly to make these vehicles appeal to all but the most hardcore Greenies. Chevy Volt said that the first generation (gas or hybrid electric) will travel about 65 miles with a fully charged battery before the gas engine kicks in. The Transit Connect Electric and leaves (both all-electric) is expected to last for about 130 kilometers and 160 kilometers, respectively, on a full battery.

The truth, however, is that nobody knows exactly how long these batteries will last in terms of real world driving, when the air conditioning units portable GPS and other electronic devices competing with the engine to the battery juice. Neither car companies know how much battery performance will degrade over time, after you have been charged and recharged hundreds of times. With most of these cars take four to eight hours to fully recharge (At least until there is a fast-charging infrastructure), some in the automotive industry recognize that all-electric vehicles might be better suited as second family car, which runs through the city over the primary vehicle owners to and from work in the suburbs.

To change this, the money has to go to research that can improve the capacity of lithium ion batteries "for quick loading and unloading, and stay safe in a position intense performance, all while reducing battery costs.
